Even during the off-season, you can still improve your golf game by taking some of the training classes offered here at Tulsa Spine and Rehab. These year-round classes focus on rotation of the spine, extension of the shoulders and upper back, hip stability/mobility, and core strengthening exercises. Exercising these muscles is beneficial to everyone—even people who are mostly sedentary and/or sit at a desk all day. Strong hips, glutes, back, and core will prevent many injuries from occurring.
Sean Riley, Ryan Smith, and myself (Bree Robinson) are all TPI Certified. The Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) is an educational organization and research facility that studies how our bodies function in relation to our golf swing. There are several advanced specialties of expertise that fall under TPI Certification. Dr. Riley and Dr. Smith are certified as Medical Professional and Junior Coach, while I am certified as Fitness Professional.
Since the body is interconnected, there could be an issue in one area that then causes other areas to compensate. For this reason, the part of the body where the issue originates is often not immediately evident. The Titleist Performance Institute has provided us with a series of screenings that we conduct on patients. These individualized test exercises will show us exactly where the patient’s weaknesses are and what they might be able to do in order to make improvements. The tests will highlight areas that the patient can focus on to increase strength and/or flexibility.
Once we know which areas to focus on, patients may be surprised to learn about the kinds of workouts they will perform. Most people go in expecting to do cardio that will leave them out of breath by the time they leave. Instead, the workouts will involve stretching the muscles with static holds. The muscles will be worked out in a totally different way than what most people are used to. Make no mistake, though, these exercises are just as intense as cardio and you’ll be sure to build up a good sweat.
In terms of noticeable progress, everybody’s body will react differently. The important thing is to stay dedicated enough to put in the hard work without becoming discouraged. Everyone has a different starting point, and it also depends on how much time outside of the clinic that you’re willing to put in. I often tell my clients that I get to spend one hour with them. From there, they have 23 more hours to make it or break it. Our clients will be equipped with the tools they need so they can continue their home programs.
The classes we offer are ideal for golfers of all ages and skill levels. The sooner you get started, the less the likelihood that you’ll end up having an issue later down the road.
