Ask Dr. Riley: What causes sciatica, and what can I do about it?

Transcript

Dr. Sean Riley:

The sciatic nerve is the large nerve that is made up of a few nerves that come out of your spine, your low back, runs down through your butt, back of your leg, all the way down to your foot. I’m sure you’ve heard of sciatica, sciatic type pain. It indicates some irritation of the nerve, and it could be at a handful of places. So the irritation of the nerve, let’s say it comes from your low back, may be a disc problem. It could come from the piriformis in your glute.

Some things that you can do about it, if you’re symptomatic, if you have radiating pain down into your leg, get up and move around. A lot of times sitting down, that compressive load of sitting starts to irritate the nerve. So I want you to get up and move around. That will be helpful. Certain types of stretches that you can find online. Obviously, chiropractic treatment and physical therapy are two really good options as well. Working on trunk stabilization, making sure you have proper mobility in your thoracic spine, down through your hips, those are good options as well.

So sciatic nerve, it’s irritation of that big nerve that runs down back of your leg. It can be caused from a few different things. Stretching, moving around are good options. Obviously, chiropractic therapy and physical therapy related to trunk stability will be helpful as well.
