Dr. Sean Riley:
So myofascial is a treatment option that we offer here in the clinic. Our chiropractors offer it. So fascia is the thin layer of tissue that lies on top of muscle. With daily activity, repetitive nature of certain types of things, sometimes trauma, sports type injuries, that fascia can become restricted or you might develop adhesions within that tissue. It causes inflammation, it becomes very uncomfortable. It can relate to decreased range of motion in certain types of things.
Myofascial therapy is a soft tissue technique to break down the adhesions. So what we’re doing is we’re using our hands. Some of our other chiros use tools to break down the adhesions within the soft tissue. So we’re looking at a couple things. We want to increase function. We want the tissue to function properly. We want to decrease inflammation and restore range of motion. But most importantly, we want to reduce the tenderness and the pain. So fascia is that tender or that thin membrane over the muscle. Myofascial therapy is an option that we’re able to manually go down and break some of those adhesions up.
