Dr. Sean Riley:
Exercise is one of the most commonly prescribed treatments here at Tulsa Spine and Rehab. Related to a low back injury, it’s going to vary. I always encourage my patients to get moving as quickly as they can within reason and without pain or dysfunction. So it’s going to vary case to case, and I definitely think with any type of injury that you need to get it checked out and consult a specialist. However, for general low back pain, through an assessment, if I make a determination that there’s nothing significant going on, it’s a sprain/strain type injury, I’m going to get that patient moving as quickly as possible. For instance, when I check the patient out after we’ve worked, I remind them it’s important to keep moving, I do not want you going home, I don’t want you lying down, I want you moving within reason. Research has shown that lying down, the old days of bed rest, it’s going to slow down the healing process and complicate things. So with any injury, get it checked out and keep moving within reason.
