Fit Tip: Open Books Ribcage stretch


Dr. Riley has a drill to help you open your thoracic area and extend your shoulder reach.

Dr. Riley:

This drill is called open books ribcage stretch. This is a good drill to increase thoracic extension and rotation. Very similar just to the basic open book drill that we like to use here in clinic. However, we’re going to have her grabbing her ribs right here. This is a good drill if we have shoulder problems, rotator cuff issues, we’re not able to move our shoulder. So we’re simply going to have her rotate, pull that ribcage and try to rotate this shoulder blade to the ground. Then she’s going to go back. We want to feel a nice big stretch right through the shoulder blades and then we’re going to go back and forth. Holding that ribcage, we’re going to stay engaged here. Big turn. It’s a great drill to increase thoracic mobility and extension and rotation. This is open books ribcage stretch.
