Clinical Massage Therapy

What is clinical massage?

massageClinical massage is when a massage therapist works alongside the doctor or physical therapist to address the patient’s issue. The doctor is directing the massage therapist to work on specific areas. It is somewhat different from what we would think of as a relaxing massage at the spa. Instead (especially when the patient has experienced a painful injury), the massage therapist may have to perform slow movements to enable the patient to relax.

What conditions benefit from clinical massage therapy?

There is an extremely wide range of different areas that benefit from clinical massage therapy. It is an effective choice for patients that have whiplash, back injuries, or injuries from sports. We often see athletes like runners or football players who have experienced a concussion.

Clinical massage has been shown to be effective at managing pain, increasing mobility, and even improving posture.

How long does each session last?

The session length is directed by the doctor. Sometimes it lasts 15 to 30 minutes, followed by other kinds of therapy. If the patient thinks they need extra time, they can then pay for as much as they need. (Insurance companies will pay for certain portions, but additional time is usually covered by the patient.)

How long is the overall treatment plan?

The treatment plan’s length depends on the severity of the patient’s issue and individual factors. Some patients may need fewer sessions if they make quick progress. Others may have issues that take longer to recover so they require a longer overall treatment plan.

Do patients need to do anything to prepare?

It depends on the kind of treatment that the massage therapist and doctor have recommended. Before treatment, they will give any special instructions if necessary. We have a workout room for patients during rehab and the end of their recovery. They may choose to wear tennis shoes or workout clothing that is comfortable for their activities.

We try to work with patients so they can do what is most convenient for them. Patients coming directly from work can simply bring their clothes with them. We work on people fully or partially clothed, covered with a sheet or towel. There is a wide variety of options so that the treatment can be geared toward the individual patient.
