Tulsa Chiropractors end up being fairly similar to each other. We go to school and learn how to mobilize joints, how to make diagnoses, and how to administer treatment.
As I’ve practiced, however, I have developed a specialization in what I like to call functional mobility. As a chiropractor, I specialize in joint mobilization, manual therapy, and isolating whether limitations are located in the joint or soft tissue. Learning about the patient’s daily activities in combination with their limitation (whether it’s flexion, extension, or they have a difficult time transitioning from siting to standing) allows us to figure out a plan for getting the area moving properly again.
This may involve some exercise or manual therapy, but the overall goal is to mobilize the area and get it functioning properly. As a result, any associated pain or discomfort will end up going away. Much of my postgraduate training has given me the ability to treat people with a different approach. Along with mobilizing joints and manipulating soft tissue, I have taken further steps to make better determinations where patients have limitations and how they can be treated.
The experience at Tulsa Spine and Rehab is different because we provide patient-centered care that is outcome based. Those two aspects of care are incredibly important—is the patient getting better, and if not, what do we need to do differently? Unfortunately, chiropractic care and physical therapy often turns into a black hole. Patients will look back several months down the line and see that they have been doing the same thing over and over without getting any better.
While what I do isn’t going to fix every type of condition a patient may experience, but what separates me from other providers is starting a fine-tuned treatment plan based upon a determination of their specific problem. If the patient is not responding to the treatment, we will apply the brakes and figure out exactly what we need to do differently until we see results. If we will need to get another provider involved or even refer the patient to someone else altogether, we will do so if that means the patient will benefit.
With other chiropractors, patients may end up in a rut where they go for an adjustment or joint manipulation and leave in a matter of minutes. This goes on and on without any sign of long-term improvement. While the patient may feel better that day, they will end up experiencing the same problem simply because the underlying issue has not been isolated and effectively treated.
At Tulsa Spine and Rehab, we want to make sure that patients are getting better in a timely manner. More importantly, we equip patients with the knowledge and tools they need to self-manage symptoms. We take great pride in our philosophy of self-management. I think patients will respond to this approach not only with diminished recurrence of symptoms, but also less time spent in my office.
When I first started practicing, I would take it personally when people said they were skeptical of chiropractic care. I tried to convince them that I would change their minds once they saw the approach that I was taking. I have gotten to the point where I will simply educate people about what we do differently here. Right when patients walk in the door, they can see the difference. As I have said in previous posts, we have no X-ray unit (it was sold more than six years ago). We also have multiple providers on premise and we will treat patients to provide relief on the first visit.
It’s simply a different environment that patients will get to experience firsthand. As they say, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. We are confident that our devotion to providing an outstanding experience to our patients will speak for itself. Most importantly, they will get better—and hopefully tell friends and family about how we do things a little bit differently here at Tulsa Spine and Rehab.
