Summertime vacation doesn’t have to involve abandoning your fitness goals. It’s possible to have fun while still eating healthy foods. This time of year, there is an abundance of fresh fruit at farmers markets. Indulge your sweet tooth while taking advantage of the local produce and fresh foods that are available this season. Fresh produce is easy to grab while on the go—it’s just as easy to pack as a bag of potato chips, with none of the guilt.
There are plenty of healthy choices that contain fewer calories than packaged, processed foods. It’s just a matter of keeping cognizant of what’s going in your body. Calorie wise, if it comes in a package, it’s probably not going to be the best choice. Search around the outer edges of the supermarket where the healthier foods are located. In terms of restaurants, have grilled food instead of fried food. Many restaurants have healthier options that won’t completely wreck your weekly progress.

During summer cookouts, you don’t have to go without eating a juicy steak. Indulge a little bit to maintain your sanity. At the same time, choose leaner meats if they are available. If you are the one cooking, buy turkey loins instead of pork. Leaner cuts of steaks, like fillets, will cut down on calories. You can also make smaller portion sizes and throw in some grilled veggies (or even fruit to add a little sweetness).
You don’t always have to stick to eating chicken. It’s easy to get some variety while managing portion size with just a little bit of planning ahead. Avoid starchy side dishes and replace them with grilled green veggies. A trip to the nearest farmer’s market, Whole Foods, or Sprouts will yield some fresh seasonal indulgences.
Monotony is the killer—you’ll get sick of having chicken and protein shakes all the time. If a summer event is coming soon, cut back ahead of time. If you’re slightly more strict the days leading up to a party, you can let loose and eat what you normally wouldn’t when the time comes. You don’t need to sit in the corner by yourself, drinking a protein shake or eating a chicken breast. Make the right choices early, so you won’t set yourself back during a social event.
When it comes to hydration (especially at the pool, barbecue, or beach), the summer sun can take a toll without you even realizing it. Don’t take advantage of thirst by drinking too many calorie filled or alcoholic drinks. Even a small bottle of water between drinks can keep you hydrated and feeling better the next day.
